Bonnie Was Not Just a Job

A portrait photo of the author, Peta Link.

I knew from the moment we boarded that plane that life was either going to break me or make me. When we arrived, I paused for a little while. Then I realised I wanted to work for an organisation that was for women and by women — a place where I could help women, where strong women worked, and where I could feel safe.

Six years ago, I stumbled upon Bonnie’s — and they caught me. In my time at Bonnie’s, I grew as a woman, both personally and professionally. For that, I am deeply grateful.

I was given the opportunity to be the change I once needed. That opportunity shaped me, strengthened me, and reminded me of the power of women supporting women.

I worked across various roles, including family worker and group facilitator, before becoming an outreach worker. Along the way, I proudly supported many women and children, each with their own story, strength and courage.

Over the years, workers have come and gone. Some passed through in the blink of an eye, while others left footprints and a lasting legacy. Those who are meant to be there remain. Those women are the foundations of Bonnie’s.

Bonnies was never just a workplace for me. It was a place of healing, growth, learning and purpose. It gave me the chance to stand beside women and children during some of the hardest moments of their lives, and it gave me the confidence to see my own strength more clearly.

As I reflect on my journey, I carry gratitude for the opportunities, the lessons, the women I worked with, and the families I supported. Bonnie’s changed me, and I will always honour the part it played in my story. It’s not goodbye, it’s see ya later, my time has come to fly.
