In 2022, I left my island home of Fiji, a place defined by its natural beauty, tight-knit communities, and a slower pace of life, to pursue my studies in Australia. Moving to Australia was a big decision. Fiji, with its stunning beaches and familiar faces, had always been my comfort zone, but I knew that Australia offered me a unique opportunity to expand my knowledge and grow as an individual.
While I was excited for this new adventure, I also had my fears. Australia felt large, unfamiliar, and far from the people and culture I loved. Adjusting to life here was initially overwhelming—the fast pace of life, the diverse mix of cultures, and the need to find my own way in a new city came with challenges.
However, my journey took a positive turn when I joined an incredible organization called Bonnies. From the moment I became a part of Bonnie’s, I felt a sense of belonging. Bonnie’s works to support individuals and families facing difficult circumstances, and they are not just an organisation—they are a community. The warmth, compassion, and support I found there made all the difference in my transition to life in Australia.
Bonnie’s offered me more than just a sense of direction; they provided a space where I felt at home. Whether it was through their supportive programs or just the friendly faces I saw regularly, the organization became a place of comfort for me, bridging the gap between my life in Fiji and my new life in Australia. It was there that I realized that home is more than just a location—it’s where you feel valued, supported, and connected.
Through Bonnie’s, I’ve had the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, many of whom, like me, were adjusting to new realities. These interactions helped me feel less alone and more confident in navigating the complexities of a new country. Australia, through its diversity and opportunities, has allowed me to grow and thrive, and Bonnie’s has been an integral part of that journey.
Now, as I reflect on my time here, Australia no longer feels like a distant foreign land. It has become my home away from home—a place where I can pursue my dreams, connect with amazing people, and continue my personal and academic journey. Though I will always cherish Fiji as my birthplace and carry its culture in my heart, I am deeply grateful to Bonnie’s and the supportive community in Sydney for making this transition smoother and helping me find a new home.
This experience has taught me that home isn’t just where you’re from; it’s where you feel supported and understood, it’s where you find comfort, growth, and belonging and I’m lucky to have found that here.
